TaxReady matches self-employed people with local accountants across the UK. It’s free for them, free for you, and already generating qualified enquiries for firms. This is what it is, why we built it, and what you need to do.
We build software for accountants. Workiro is a document management and workflow platform used by accounting firms across the UK, and over the years we’ve had a lot of conversations with the people running those firms.
One thing comes up again and again: the challenge of finding good clients. Not just any clients - the right ones. People who actually need an accountant, understand the value of one, and are ready to have a proper conversation. That kind of lead can be hard to come by, and the usual routes to finding them - directories, referrals, Google Ads – can be expensive, unreliable, or both.
At the same time, we kept seeing the same statistic surface in the press: 5.6 million UK taxpayers overpaid HMRC in 2023/24, leaving a collective £3.5 billion on the table. The average overpayment was £625. Many of these are self-employed people, freelancers, landlords, sole traders and company directors who are either doing their own returns and missing things, or not engaging at all.
Those two problems looked like they belonged together. So we built something to connect them.
TaxReady (taxready.uk) is a freeUK tax calculator and accountant-matching tool. A self-employed person visits the site, tells us what they do (freelancer, landlord, contractor, sole trader, company director and so on) and within 30 seconds gets a free estimate of their likely tax position for 2025/26.
Then we match them with the best-fit local accounting firm from our database of UK firms. The match isbased on their income type, their location, and real Google review data. They see your firm’s name, your rating, and a prompt to get in touch.
That’s it. No subscription. No cost per lead. The person has already thought about their tax situation, already seen an estimate of what they owe, and is already primed to talk to someone. They’re not a cold prospect, they’re warm and eager to talk.
We were deliberate about this. The existing accountant directories and lead gen platforms tend to work one of two ways: you either pay to appear prominently, or you compete in a race to respond fastest to a shared enquiry that’s been sent to six other firms at the same time.
Neither of those models really serves the accountant. The first rewards budget, not quality. The second creates a frantic, undignified scramble that drives down fees and treats your firm as a commodity.
TaxReady works differently. The matching is based on relevance - your specialisms, your location, your ratings - not who’s paid the most to appear. And because each user is matched to one firm at a time rather than blasted to a list, there’s no race. The enquiry comes to you.
The direct benefits are straightforward:
• Qualified enquiries from self-employed people who are already thinking about their tax. Not cold traffic. People who’ve used the tool, seen their estimate, and want to talk to someone.
• Visibility to the right audience. TaxReady is built primarily for the self-employed segment - the exact clients most accountants are trying to grow. Every user on the platform is a potential client for your firm.
• No cost and no competition. There’s nothing to pay, no bidding, and no shared leads. A match goes to one firm.
• A better first impression. When a prospect arrives having already thought about their tax situation and seen a rough number, the opening conversation is more productive. You’re not starting from scratch.
There’s also something less tangible but worth naming: being part of a tool that genuinely helps people. TaxReady exists to address a real problem; millions of self-employed people overpaying because they don’t have good advice. Firms on the platform are part of the solution to that.
The TaxReady AI algorithm matches users to firms based on three things: proximity (we prioritise local firms), income type (if a user identifies as a landlord, firms with property specialism rank higher), and reputation (Google rating and review count factor in).
That means your profile quality directly affects how often and how relevantly you appear. A firm with a complete profile (location accurate, specialisms listed, strong Google presence) will consistently outperform a firm with incomplete or default information.
It’s also worth knowing that the platform covers all the main self-employed categories: construction and trades, freelancers and contractors, landlords, hospitality and food, healthcare, creatives, sole traders, and company directors. If you have particular strength in any of these areas, making sure that’s reflected in your profile is the single most effective thing you can do.
We’ve populated the platform with over 2,500 UK accounting firms using publicly available data, so there’s a reasonable chance your firm already appears. But an auto-populated listing is not the same as an optimised one.
Here’s what we’d recommend:
• Search for your firm on taxready.uk and check what currently appears. Is the information accurate? Is your location correct? Does the description reflect what you actually do?
• Add your specialisms. The more specific you are about the clients you serve best, the better the matches you’ll receive.
• If your firm isn’t listed at all, fill in the form and we’ll add you. It takes us a few minutes.
• Make sure your Google presence is in good shape. Your Google Business rating feeds directly into the algorithm. If you’ve been meaning to ask satisfied clients for a review, now’s a reasonable time to do it.
We’ll be straight with you: we created TaxReady to give something back to the accounting community. We see your stresses and if we can help in some small way, that’s a win for us.
Workiro is a document management and client workflow platform built specifically for accountants, from the creators of Virtual Cabinet. It handles the operational side of running a practice - getting documents signed, chasing information from clients, keeping work moving without the endless back-and-forth. A lot of the firms we talk to are still doing that on email and spreadsheets, and it costs them hours every week.
But that’s not why we built this. Right now, we’d just like your firm on TaxReady, sending you warm leads.
Visit taxready.uk to see the platform and search for your firm.
